Just how fast and reliable is your internet connection? It’s the lifeblood of modern business, especially as the use of cloud-based software increases, but many of our clients don’t give a second thought to whether their internet set up could be optimised.
Having worked with New Zealand businesses for more than 10 years, we see a number of common internet connection issues that are often overlooked, but are generally easily solved.
Here’s our take on the issues you should be aware of, and how a better internet connection could reduce your operating expenses.
Time is money… And slow connections cost!
If we had a dollar for every time a client complained about the speed of their internet connection…!
Speeding up your internet connection could easily save you 5 or 10 minutes a day – doesn’t sound like much on its own, but multiplied over just a handful of staff that unproductive time adds up.
The Government is currently in the process of pouring $2billion into upgrading the nation to fibre that delivers Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB). Once you have UFB, you’ll be able to do things like online backups, remote office connections, VoIP and online conferencing faster than ever before. UFB is also more reliable as its infrastructure is all new, so there’s less downtime than existing copper connections.
The snag is that upgrading the entire country will take time – if you want to see how long you’ll need to wait, this handy link will tell you.
The good news is that, even if UFB is still years away for you, there are other options to speed up your connection, such as VDSL. Want to know how the upload and download speeds for UFB, VDSL and ADSL compare? Check out this diagram:
Save big bucks on your landline.
If you have 2 or more phone lines in your office, switching from a standard landline plan to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) will save you a lot of money.
As well as providing our clients with IT support and services, Ayone offers fast internet and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). While each situation is different, generally speaking most of our clients’ phone bills reduce by 30-50%.
Failover internet if your connection goes down.
What would you do if your internet went down right now, or tomorrow… or just as you were about to send a vital email? Do you have a plan B? If you call your telco provider, how long is it likely to take before you are back online (or at the top of the queue if a technician is needed)?
We work with many of our clients to put a contingency plan in place so that, should their main connection be interrupted, they are still able to access the internet and their email.
Get up and running in a new location faster.
Unlike a desk, chair or photocopier, shifting your internet connection if your business changes premises isn’t as easy as simply calling the moving company.
If your internet provider is a major telco, you’re unlikely to get a high level of dedicated support on moving day. A much better bet is to get your IT provider to help you handle the shift; they can be on-site to enable a smooth transition and ensure there is a back-up connection to cover any period when your internet is down.
Integrate your internet and IT set-up.
Most businesses rely on email to get on with their day-to-day operations, and more and more businesses are relying on cloud-based software such as Office365 too.
That being the case, it makes sense to have a single provider looking after your IT support and your internet connection. As well as giving you a single point of contact for both, you’ll get a more personalised service than if you leave your connection with a major telco.
About Ayone Computers
As well as providing our clients with IT support and services, Ayone offers fast internet and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
If you’re not happy with the service you’re getting from your telco provider, consider switching to a business-focussed provider like Ayone. You’ll achieve greater connection speed because you’re not competing with all of the telco’s residential customers and if you have an issue with your connection you won’t be stuck in a call queue for ages.
